THE POINT offers arts, environmental, and business-oriented programs to help unearth the hidden skills and talents of residents who live in the South Bronx. The Youth Development programming offers after school services throughout the school year in addition to summer programming for 300 Hunts Point young people in grades 1-12. Through justice-based arts and service learning activities the youth programs aim to support the academic, artistic, and positive social development of young people and engage them as active participants in community development. The Arts and Culture programming offers live performances, exhibitions, public art projects and community workshops. The programs are dedicated to the cultivation and preservation of South Bronx culture and make the arts economically and geographically accessible to local residents. MISSION THE POINT Community Development Corporation is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) dedicated to youth development and the cultural and economic revitalization of the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. We work with our neighbors to celebrate the life and art of our community, an area traditionally defined solely in terms of its poverty, crime rate, poor schools and substandard housing. We believe the area’s residents, their talents and aspirations, are THE POINT’s greatest assets. THE POINT offers a multi-faceted approach to asset-based community development. Its programming falls within three main headings - Youth Development, Arts and Culture and Community Development - all aimed at investing in the long-term betterment of Hunts Point. HOW VARIETY HELPS Variety the Children’s Charity of New York’s grant partially funds The POINT’s Summer Youth Programs which include: Summer Day Adventure, Camp Quinnahung, and Summer Youth Leadership. Summer Day Adventure involves approximately 65 youth in grades 6-8 taking part in literacy and arts-based programming, sports and educational field trips. Some visits include the Museum of Natural History or participating in a sports day at the Barretto Point Park. Camp Quinnahung is a camp where the philosophy is focused on mentoring. All participants receive intense attention and encouragement virtually around the clock. In upstate New York, approximately 65 campers in grades 6-8 take part in outdoor activities such as an all-camp hike, educational arts and literacy-based workshops and athletic activities that allow them to explore and nourish their skills and talents. The Summer Youth Leadership program allows approximately 30 teens in grades 9-12 to have the chance and join in on the fun and develop important life skills as program counselors. The teens learn mentoring, teamwork, and first aid skills and help staff Summer Day Adventure and Camp Quinnahung.
